LADIES ONLY - RAINEY POKER PARTY: MARCH 7, 2007
Last year, Rainey of "Casa Anuja" in El Juncalito, hosted a ladies-only poker party at her palapa. Not serious poker, rather a zany game using improvised poker chips. Rainey also made up silly hats for each lady to wear. It was an afternoon full of laughter--so much fun that Rainey vowed to do another poker party next year.
Sadly, after enjoying over 20 years of living in Baja, dear Rainey passed away Jan 7th. In her honor, a few ladies got together to host the poker party, this time at the HPYC clubhouse. All ladies were invited to attend. The only requirements were: wear a funny hat & bring your own poker chips. A table was set up with photos of Rainey, flowers & a bottle of Las Palmas rum. The ladies spent a few minutes honoring Rainey: her generous spirit-- she was the 'hostess with the mostess'.
Indeed, Rainey & Fred co-chaired the Social/Entertainment Committee for HPYC.
To knock on their palapa door meant, even if you were a stranger, you left as a friend. After a moment of silence & a few tears, the ladies toasted Rainey.
Then someone shouted, "Let's play poker!"
Creativity was the name of this game! Poker chips ranged from buttons, used fishing lures, jewelry, ribbons, seashells, even a Mr. Wonderful doll & a boat handrail! The betting tables were full of unusual chips, quite a sight to see!
Two hours and lots of laughter later, it was decided to make the 'Rainey Poker Party' an annual ladies event at the clubhouse.
Be sure to be there next year, & don't forget to wear a funny hat, and bring those crazy poker chips!
We know Rainey was with us smiling her approval.

New Year's El Juncalito: December 31,2006
Every New Years Eve Don and Doreen "Dorita" invites everyone from Puerto Escondido, Tripui, and Juncalito to come and enjoy a spectacular Fireworks display. They were better than last year, lighting the sky with reds, greens, purples, orange and white. Everybody bundled up to watch the show, some walking from their palapa's others driving over from the harbor. No names mentioned, there was one party of cruisers that stayed long after the fireworks partying on the beach bring in the New Year.
New Year's in the Mangroves: December 31,2006
A warm bon fire to ward off the cold and roast hot dogs was the evenings lead up to bringing in the New Year in the mangroves.
Christmas Raft Up Puerto Escondido: December 25,2006:
Twas a warm Christmas Day with blue skies, and a gentle breeze when all the Merry cruisers and dirt cruisers boarded their water sleighs traveling across the deep blue water for "Drue Ann" and "Angelos" carrying their very best finger food to share. And lo and behold when they arrived they were met with warm smiles, cheer and hot mulled wine. Everywhere you looked there were jolly Santa's and little elf's going from one water sleigh to the other enjoying the many goodies, holiday cheer and friends. The fun and laughter continued through out the day until not even a mouse or creature stirred.
Lugui AsistEd Christmas Party December 2006:
Remember the Swap Meet and Bake Sale in November, the one with all the baked goodies and "Jelly Beans" where the proceeds go for a Christmas Party for the High School kids in the Lugui dormitory? This is becoming an annual event and it gets better every year.
Consumed: 120 chicken tamales, 3 gallons friljoles con salsas, 4 gallons hot chocolate, 1 grande tres leches cake, 1 gallon of vanilla ice cream, and dulces varios.
Not exactly a dieters menu, but we needed the calories to combat the cold and energize the pool game, dancing and general activities.

Christmas Internado Loreto: December 20, 2006:
The Christmas party started on a cold windy afternoon with the kids
entertaining Director Chuy, teachers, aids, staff, parents and some
American/Canadians friends with a couple of dance skits. The fun started with
Piñatas, one for each of the 6 different age groups, the age ranges from 6 to
14. Four boys stood on top of the cafeteria
manning the action of the Piñata while the kids took turns
trying to break it open to release the candy. After the kids were done, the
adults were honored, being asked, to try breaking open a Piñata this really
entertained the kids.

64 kids all in one gathering is one thing but
watching 64 kids opening Christmas presents is very unique especially when
these might be the only presents they will receive for Xmas. At the
wrapping party on the 18th, it took longer wrapping the presents than them
being on wrapped!! A Xmas
dinner was served ending the evening activities.. Chuy would take everyone home the next day to spend Xmas
with their family.
It is very special to participate in this
Christmas event.
Every year HPYC, with proceeds from Loreto Fest, sponsors two students' education at the Internado.
Thanksgiving: November 23, 2006
Thanksgiving in P.E. can be an adventure. (One year the turkeys did not get
done, we had turkey sandwiches at Sunday Brunch!!) This year it was very
successful, thanks to Jean and Myron "La Tortuga" who cooked the turkeys, they
were done to perfection. Everyone brought a side dish and desert. The bar was
open serving margaritas.

Loreto Internado: November 18, 2006
For many years HPYC has sponsored two children
with some of the proceeds from Loreto Fest. This year the two are
Maritza -
Carmen from the village of El Juncalito. Both girls were present at the annual
Xmas party held for the donation of gifts for the kids. There are 64 attending
school.
Patty
Ferrentino presided at the gathering,
thanking everyone who came, the musician, all the wonderful cooks for the great
food. A raffle was also held.
This year's
party was made a bit more special with Ann O'Neil presences. She gave a short
history of the Internado.
20 years ago when the government said education would be available for all children, Ann and her husband Don were asked to help. The original school was at the mission. The conditions were really bad, one shower worked, barely, water leaks, not enough beds, and all the cooking was done outside on an open fire. Three meals a day for 60 kids!
Ann and Don started asking friends and visitors to help with any talent they might have as well as cash donations. When Fisherman used the ramp in front of their house on the Malecón they asked for a donation for the school. Ann started teaching English to the older kids and after meeting Linda Nichols about 18 years ago, she asked her to keep the little kids entertained while she taught. It all went on from there. Garage Sales and Bake Sales, the Christmas Diner have been held, help received by other clubs and HPYC, and three years ago we were included in the donations from the Fishin for the Mission group
The present wrapping will be on Monday, the 18th of December starting at 9:00 A.M. and the Children's Xmas Party will be the following day Tuesday, the 19th and will start a 3 30 P.M. Everyone is invited.
Sunday Bruch November 5, 2006
Everyone attending enjoyed the "Special" Sunday Brunch learning a new fun way to make omelets cooking them in hot water. Sounds weird? This was such a success we will be doing it more often.
Swap Meet and Bake sale: November 4, 2006
For the last four years there has been a fall "Swap Meet & Bake Sale". This year's was the most successful for those swapping and trading. Also the bake sale, proceeds going to the Lugui school kids for a Christmas party brought in 2237.50 Pecos from baked good and donations.
Dinghy Dock: November 4, 2006
After the swap meet the dinghy dock was moved from it's summer home on the south wall of the ellipse to it's winter home on the west wall of the ellipse. (The photographer forgot her camera and missed some good candied shots. OOPS!!!)
Halloween Party: October 31, 2006
our Halloween bash was hosted by Debbie "Ladyfish: who was a zebra
and Ben "Calliope" who came as Crocodile Dundee
and also tended bar, some great drinks were served and good tunes played. There were
pirates in abundance and some dogs too!
Redmond "Moon Me" came as "Populous Pontus" The Greek god of Halloween
and received a prize for the loudest costume. First prize as a couple went to
Dave, Carolyn and Paz "?Que Tal"
as a family of "Dalmatians". Second prize as a couple went to "Soul
Searcher"
for their creative pirate outfits. Myron "La Tortuga"
got a prize for the best fitting Too-Too. Special mention went to Fred "Moon
Me" for his impersonation of our Commodore "Sealover".
Some of the local kids came out to join us and did some
trick or treating in their unique
costumes.
A good time was had by all, there was food, music, drinking and dancing. Everyone went home safe and sound. Come join us next year.
On a late Saturday afternoon approximately 30 of us were treated to a Las Vegas style show performed by Fred Taft and Redmond O'Connel the new owners of "Moon Me". Former owner Jeff could not have found anyone better to take over the helming as they are as entertaining as he.
Fred is from California; was in radio and a talk show host. Redmond is
from Lancashire England and has a varied background in performing and
entertaining on radio and TV. He is also the champion "Town Crier" making
announcements at private parties and public.
The show they delighted HPYC members and friends started with Fred playing pop and rhythm guitar music along with jokes, a little personnel bio and voice impersonations. This was the lead in to Redmond's entertaining Early American humor, songs, and Monologs. Everyone laughed, clapped, and enjoyed. We hope they will entertain for us again soon.
May 26, 2006 marked the opening day for
water volleyball at
in Puerto Escondido. Part of the actives included a carb loading pizza fest.
A special thank you goes out to
Gail "Blue Moon" for arranging the pizza order and picking them up.
Approximately athletes 25-30 a
showed up for the event. The tide was high, so all stayed cool. At half time
cerveza kept the teams well hydrated.
Closing ceremonies included Jo "Una Mata" banging on here outboard motor to get it started and then hitting a large rock she had previously warned other of.
So come on out and join us for a game, you won't be disappointed!

Banana Bash on Rattlesnake Beach: February 12, 2006
The 2nd Annual Banana Bash was hosted by Gareth "Big Banana". (Gareth has been the head of our local Search & Rescue Team) He invited beach dwellers, kayakers, friends and HPYC members to come have fun on the beach. Everyone had a great time; the party was attended by 70 plus people. People started to find the long winding drive into Rattlesnake or came by dinghy around 2:30 and some stayed on till after 11:00. The beg kegs were a little temperamental, but "Delta Girl" in charge of cooking the fish for the fish taco's did an outstanding job, not only was it great, she cooked over 40 lbs.

Super Bowl Sunday: February 5, 2006
The week before Super Bowl Sunday you could hear anticipated conversations - Steelers - Seahawks -- Seahawks - Steelers so when the big day came everyone was primed for the game at "Casa Anuja" Fred and Rainey's. They are the quarterbacks for putting together a great party. Games watchers started to arrive for the pre game show with food in hand and warm greetings. After checking out the pool board; everyone found their favorite viewing place in front on one of the four TV's that were placed in different parts of their palapa.
After filling the plates with all the good food brought, the kickoff over, all eyes were glued to the screens. There were cheers and boos, then came the Half Time Show.
|
While the Rolling Stones played, we were treated to a special birthday, Bob "Vela" celebrated his 85th. And there was dancing, Patti "Last Mango". |
|
With each quarter the thoughts for the final game score became more intense. The final was the "biggie". So when it was all said and done -------
