Posted January 14, 2008: "Delfin Solo" & "Sans clés "

"Delfin Solo" and Sans clés both departed Puerto Escondido January 12th each continuing their adventures and dreams.  A Bon Voyage party was held on "Delfin Solo" with smiles and tears. We hope that you both return someday. Terri we would love to hear your song.

Tahsin and Rengin were part of our community for 6 short months. You added something special; finding a place in Puerto Escondido and in the hearts of many. They will be traveling down the mainland coast of Mexico, through the Panama canal, across the Atlantic, continuing to their birth home of Turkey.

Delfin Solo - Tahsin and Rengin Sans clés - Terri and Lyman

From: Terri "Sans clés"

The day we sailed into Puerto Escondido for the first time we saw only a beautiful, almost fully enclosed harbor poised on the brink of development.  Ambitious plans had gone awry, however, and we were disappointed when the facilities and services did not live up to our first impression.  That was nearly a month ago.  Since then, we’ve left and returned three times.  There is much more here than initially meets the eye.  Each time we’ve been here, we’ve learned more about the cruising community that makes this their home.  Each time, they’ve offered us their help and freely given their friendship.  Today, we entered the harbor with a sense of belonging.

When we leave Puerto Escondido we’ll take with us very fond memories of some truly wonderful and very colorful people.  You can’t share the moments of another person’s life without being sewn into its fabric.  Perhaps it’s only a thread, but even a single thread is important to the whole design.

Posted January 9, 2008:  "Elusive" Bill

"Sax Man Bill" celebrated his 75th birthday January, 8th. Kip and Mary held a wonderful party on "Angelos " in the afternoon.  Mary baked a cake and everyone helped Bill celebrate. Bill might be 75, but is 25 at heart.  If you hear sax or clarinet music floating across the water some evening that will be him, sit back and enjoy.

 From: Terri "Sans clés"

We’d returned on this particular day to celebrate the birth 75 years ago of one of the long-time residents with whom we’d become acquainted…Bill on "Elusive".  Bill found a place in our hearts at our first meeting, and when we learned this milestone birthday was coming up for him we spread the word; the local cruising community rose to the occasion.  Contributions were gathered to help him buy a new VHF radio; everyone signed his card and congregated on the decks of "Angelos" anchored in the Waiting Room.  It was standing room only.

Posted December 31, 2007: "Chez Moi" - Victoria

Victoria died this morning at Sharp hospital in Mazatlan. She had surgery for a blockage in the small intestine, and was recovering well. She was planning to return home on the first and was in good spirits and feeling well when her heart simply stopped early in the morning.

Posted December 21,2007: "JOAN D III"

Love to all from Michael and Lizette

Hello and a big thank you to everybody involved in saving the Joan D III and hauling her out. Lizette and I have been talking about what a wonderful community Puerto Escondido and Juncalito are and how wonderful it is to be a part of that community. It is incredible that I had moved her to the Ellipse  the year a plank went bad... had she been on her old mooring she would certainly gone down. Once again thanks to all! In case anyone is whining about the cold them that it is 12* tonight here in Anchorage... so be mighty glad you are anchored there and not here!

Hello All from T'N Honey in La Paz

We went for 2 days to visit our son, Chuck, in The Dalles, Oregon.
On Friday the 12th of October, the day we were to return home to Auburn, WA., Thelma got very sick, throwing up blood. We called 911 and had her taken to emergency at the hospital. They got her stabilized and put her in ICU. After 3 days they transferred her to critical care. After x rays, cat scans, endoscope and upper GI tests the doctors told me we had no choice but to operate on her stomach. She had a bad hiatal hernia that caused her stomach to be all twisted out of shape and was causing the left lung a problem affecting her breathing. They fixed the hernia, straighten the stomach, put in a feeding tube to the small intestine and took out her gall bladder as it had stones in it. The operation was on the 22nd of Oct and went well. The doctor said the stomach was somewhat extended and had scar tissue. She recovered enough to come home on the 2nd of November and is slowly getting better. It will be some time yet before she gets back to something like normal.

Just thought I'd send this picture along to show that Betty and I are up and running again. We bought this 1965 Columbia 24 off EBay. We spent this summer sailing near Chama, NM. Its a high lake at around 6000 ft. Bought a kayak as well and fished for trout. really had fun. Who knows?  We might head south again. We named her        "Pearl".

"This Side Up" was recently broken into. She was moored in the northwest corner of the harbor, also called Galadriel Cove. The thieves dumped every drawer and emptied every cupboard and shelf.  The biggest loss was the outboard motor, dinghy and all the solar panels. The dingy was recovered shoved up into the mangroves.  Dan is assessing the damage to it and will soon know whether it is usable. The motor is a 30 HP Yamaha 2 stroke. Their entire dive gear all the regulators, masks, gloves, flashlights, etc. except for Pat's BC is gone. All the spare gear was in one bag which made it easy pickings. The fishing lures which were also very conveniently boxed up are gone. They also took all the electronics, part of the auto pilot including the inside steering wheel. The electric wench remote control was taken and left the auto pilot control on the wall and the wench attached to the deck!  The VHF radio and all tools, including a table saw, are gone. They also took the VCR and DVD player.  A police report was filed on this.

"Summer Wind"  Bill and Stephanie, came into Juncalito on their way north to San Carlos to put the boat up for sale.  Word quickly spread, and there were suddenly 15 boats anchored in the bay and a party planned.  Almost everyone there had been cruising the Sea when Hurricane Marty had hit in 2003, ("Summer Wind", "Cat's Meow", "Que Tal", "Topaz"," Winsome"" and "Sealover") and many of us had worked together to rescue boats in the Puerto Escondido area after the hurricane and/or to rescue The Cat's Meow when she went on the rocks in 2004. ("Two Can Play" and "Cat House" were also present.)

“We Survived Marty”

A very special evening!

There were 40 old/new cruisers and dirt people in attendance.

Posted January 6, 2007: "Viva"

From Harold Underwood “Viva” 1995 Member #248

Paulette and I are fine, a little older with a few more scars.  The Drs seem to want to cut on you more the older you get.  We miss being there and will return again.  Soon I hope.

We have settled in Oxnard, CA close to the beach.  One of our grandsons lives two doors away.  We have a good life.  If there is any support we can give to those there from here, please let us know.

We sold "Viva" about three years ago to a local in Channel Islands Harbor.  She is good hands.  We now have a 38 ft. Californian trawler named "Absolute".   Lots of room and no sails to set.  We set the course on GPS, engage the auto pilot, and pour a cocktail.  Like they say on TV, "Set It and Forget It".

As with all those who have been there, a part of us will always remain. Or perhaps Puerto Escondido lives within us.

Fair winds and following seas, Woody "Absolute"

Posted December 3, 2006: Willy "Willy's Tienda"

Willy "Willy's Tienda", Wilfredo Campos Gutierrez, September 18, 1958 Guamuchil, Sinaloa, our friend and the person who helped to make Puerto Escondido, the surrounding communities, and Loreto Fest easier and better for everyone has past on, December 1, 2006.

Willy was driving from Loreto to the Tienda on Sunday November 26 when a tire blew on his truck. The doctors who performed the autopsy were surprised he lived as long as he did from the internal injuries he sustain.

Willy started the Tienda approximately 17 years ago in Puerto Escondido. He weathered the loss of business and customers twice from upheaval in the harbor and two fires in Tripui.

His wife Magdalena, of the Villalejo family in El Juncalito, 2 sons and 1 daughter survive him.

Hello Friends,

Garth and Vela have returned to the sea after a great summer in the San Juan islands.  Thanks to the many cruisers who contributed to the fund to help the Meija family rebuild after the Mulege flood.  .  We probably will travel mostly by ponga through January visiting Puerto Escondido.  Dan and Pat James who invented the wave stopper hard dodger will probably join us in January.  We plan to launch a freshly painted Pink “Inclination” in March.
