SHOW ME THE MONEY
Members ask us what we do with the money made from Loreto Fest and from the membership, hats, and t-shirt sales. So here we go:
HPYC began helping AsistED in 2002 as part of the Community Outreach Program to help our local (and neglected) communities at the Southern end of the municipality of Loreto. The relationship has endured. During the early years HPYC assistance helped support the Internado (dormitory for the students in the fish camps and ranches) and the rural communities educational assistance program which was set up to give the rural students a chance to attend high school and if qualified university. To date AsistED has helped 67 young people through high school and twelve through university,
This year we have 27 in high school. The high school students receive financial assistance for tuition, books and uniforms according to the needs of the families.
Also, this year we have eleven in University. The university students receive help also according to need. Several have to live away and have some help with living expenses as well as tuition and books from AsistED. HPYC provided scholarships for two students. Conditions for assistance depend on the financial ability of the families to pay. Eligibility requires an 8.0 GPA for assistance with high school. Help for university requires acceptance by the college or university and an 8.5 GPA thereafter.
For the last three years HPYC has helped AsistED with the library computer center at Ligüí where it offers for all students and adults in the communities English language courses with Rosetta Stone on its 11 computers provide computer training course (none still is offered by the high school COBACH in Loreto) and keep the equipment operational.
Here is a picture of HPYC Treasurer Don Beck with Patti on his right who is a HPYC Scholar and recent graduate with a degree in Psychology from University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), San Jose del Cabo Campus.
On his left is Yesenia who is in her 2nd year of teachers college. We have also included some pictures of the kids at work in the library and helping with Loreto Fest.
This year we were also able to take on two new projects: Caritas, a non-profit group that helps supply food to area needy.
In this picture, taken in front of the clubhouse, we see some of the food that we donated.
This year we were also able helped the UABCS in Loreto. We had intended to help with the student fund but the Director MC. Juan de Jesús Pérez Agundez asked that instead we help air condition the library since it was so hot that the students could not use it during the day. The decision was made to purchase two air conditioners for the library. The presentation was attended by Marcos Covarrubias Villaseñor the Governor of the State of Baja California Sur, the Rector of UABCS, President of the Mcpo. de Loreto Jorge Alberto Avilés Pérez and of course by Director Pérez
We have only been able to do this with the help of the members and all of those that attend Loreto Fest. It is through your memberships, t-shirt and hat purchases and all those hot dogs that we accomplish this.
THANK YOU!
