His father like his father before him are fishermen. They etch a meager living from the sea as all the men in the remote fishing village of Agua Verde do.
One afternoon Enrique’s life changed drastically when he and his friends were playing. He was accidentally shot with a pellet gun in the leg very near the femoral artery. So his family packed up the kids, aunts, uncles and any neighbors that deemed necessary to get in on the action and started on the long and arduous trip to the city doctor.
Once in the hospital tests and X-rays revealed something more. Enrique’s kidneys were failing. Doctors confirmed he had a birth defect that caused this alarming situation. He was placed on dialysis and the kidney transplant list.
Enrique is now at home with his family in the village he will most likely spend the rest of his life. Hopefully someday he will fish the sea as his father and grandfather. He is a small boy with a humble shyness about him.
Our dear friends informed our community of boaters that his family could not generate enough electricity to run his home dialysis machine for the desired time each night. Our community jumped into a fever pitched frenzy of action to raise the money needed to buy the equipment needed to run his machine properly.
Money came pouring in from all kinds of sources, even as far away as the states.
Batteries, generator, wire, battery charger, gas to run the generator, solar panels etc. we’re purchased.
Then one not so foggy Christmas morning four elves climbed in their shiny four wheel drive sleigh and headed out to deliver gifts.
The way to Agua Verde by land is imposing and treacherous to say the least, but the rewards are plentiful. As we came upon the peak of the mountain top a vista so incredible unfolded before us and we were speechless. What to my wonder but the sea of Cortez stretched out endless to our eyes, a scatting of islands rising above the sea like creatures of another world, the sun sparkling off the water, we could only stop and stare. Not to mention a bazillion pictures were taken.
The 2.5 hour drive was not without it’s constant beauty, dirt washboard road with shear cliffs. I for one was glad to arrive. finding the young man took a bit of initiative but once found the work began to install said equipment. With hugs and tears of appreciation Enrique’s mom loaded the old wood stove and started making homemade tortillas. Got to feed the guests.
Enrique’s father showed us his medical bills for the medications that is necessary for his boy. He was given enough money to pay off his bills and buy more medication. Thanks to the efforts of people helping people. As We drove out of sight these four elves knew in their hearts that a true gift had been delivered.
